New Zealand - Queenstown and Fiordland national park

After another beautiful bus trip where we crossed some stunning viewpoints I reached Queenstown. The bus trips on the southern island are really focused on showing how beautiful New Zealand is. Compared to the northern island, where the bus will just bring you from A to B, I really enjoyed the trips here.

Queenstown really is a place on its own, incomparable to other city’s in New Zealand which are a bit boring in my opinion. In the evenings there are actually things to do and I missed a bit of nightlife the last month.

The next morning it was pouring but that did not hold me back to go out and hike. Ben Lomond is a mountain located next to Queenstown and is easy accessible. From the hostel, the journey started and I was curious about the views which should have been breathtaking.

In total it was a 15 km walk and the climb also was pretty steep, 1500 meters ascend and back. All the steps in the previous month helped me a lot, because if I had to do this trail in the beginning of my time in New-Zealand, it would be a lot more exhausting.

During the hike I enjoyed some really nice views, but the clouds were coming and when I reached the top of the mountain I couldn’t see anything. Pretty sad, but the walk itself was already worth it.

The next day it was time to go and see one of the most beautiful and popular places of New Zealand in the name of Milford Sound located in Fiordland national park. It is the biggest and most green national park in New Zealand thanks to the fact that it rains here more than 200 days a year.

During the bus trip the views already were spectacular and we stopped a couple of times. At one point there were Kea parrots, the only alpine parrots in the world. There were not so shy so I was able to shoot some nice shots of them.

After a while we reached the harbor from where all the boats started their trip through the Milford sound. Everywhere I looked it looked like a postcard, steep mountains, countless waterfalls. It is one of the most spectacular places I have been.

Besides a lot of fur seals there was not so much to see talking about wildlife. There is a chance to spot dolphins or even (killer)whales, but sadly we were not lucky enough to spot them. But that did not spoil the fun. It was an amazing experience.

The next day it was my last day in queenstown. I enjoyed the cold water of Lake Wakatipu and in the afternoon I took the gondola up the mountain. Here I took the luge down a couple of times which was really funny. Time to sleep and of to Dunedin.
