Fiji - Yasawa islands

A couple months ago I decided to plan a trip to New Zealand. I was not interested in flying to New Zealand in one time so Fiji was a perfect stop. On the 8th of December I arrived in Singapore where I stayed for one night. The next day I flew to Fiji.

I arrived at the airport around 4 p.m. and I took a cab to my first stay in Nadi, which was a homestay. I entered the house and the owner made dinner for me. After dinner he offered me to bring me to the beach. The water was so warm and the weather was amazing despite the raining season. It didn’t rain at all. There where some children and they asked me to play some rugby, the most popular sport of the country. After a while I asked the owner to pick me up and I went to bed.

The next morning I took the bus to Port Denarau, from here I took the Yasawa flyer to the first island called Wayasewa. The boat ride took around 1,5 hours.  Wayasewa is a small island with a population of approximately 200 people, there are two villages on this island. Here, I stayed in a homestay for two nights.

When I arrived, the lady of the house made me lunch. The food here was super fresh, especially the fruit was so sweet and juicy. Almost everything I ate, they grew or catched themselves. I also ate a lot of cassava, the Fijians eat it almost with every meal.

The water is crystal clear and the sand is so fine and white, it literally looks like a movie scene. The first day I relaxed and snorkeled a bit. There are so many different kinds of colorful fish, I just wanted to be in the water the whole day!

The next day I jumped in the boat and someone brought me to a place, about 45 minutes of shore, where I swam with some white tip reef sharks. There were three sharks, some baby sharks and plenty of other fish. After I came back to the island I had some lunch and I snorkeled some more, I saw another reef shark and a green sea turtle which are pretty rare to see. In the evening I joined the prayer of the family and they played some music.

When I woke up the local rugby team was training for a tournament. These guys are so strong and quick, that’s what real athleticism looks like. After this I had to catch the Yasawa flyer to the next island. The experience at this homestay was on of the best I had. The family was super friendly and this gave me a good insight in the Fijian culture. Thank you Ruci's homestay!

My next stop was after two hours on the flyer and now I stayed in a hostel on a bigger island called Nacula island. The name of the accommodation is Safe Landing Eco-Lodge. When I arrived I took a kayak and went to out to another private beach. During the trip I saw a stingray under the kayak. On the beach I tried to open up a coconut, but that is harder then I thought. After a while I decided to return and it already was time for dinner, there was some delicious fresh fish on the menu.

On day two I planned some activities. In the morning we went out to the Sawa I-lau caves. This was very nice and there was a friendly, inquisitive fresh water eel. We swam a bit and we even had to swim through a hole to reach a spot where it was so dark that you couldn’t see anything. Luckily there was a flashlight.

After lunch it was snorkeling time again, we went to three different places and we spotted moray eel, stingray and another reef shark. We also saw a big oyster and a big cabbage coral. This already was the last full day on the islands. The next day I relaxed and swam a bit and then it was time to catch the ferry again. It was a 3,5 hour ride back to Port Denarau. I took the bus to the same house where I stayed the first night.

The house owner brought me to the beach again and I had dinner there. When I returned at the house I went to bed because the next day my flight to New Zealand was on the planning. Fiji was an amazing experience, it was so beautiful. Especially the friendly people of the island.
